An Apple (or 7) a Day

I’m sure you’re familiar with the old adage “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. When it comes to taking active steps in reducing your risk of breast cancer, maintaining a healthy diet may be one of the easiest proactive steps you can take to reduce your risk.

Research has shown that eating a low fat, high fiber diet with lots of fruits and veggies may decrease risk by up to 20%. The Canadian Food Guide recommends that women between the ages of 19 – 50 should eat 7 to 8 servings of fruits and vegetables per day.

For example, if you are a 35 year old woman you should aim to have:
- 7-8 vegetables and fruit
- 6-7 grain products
- 2 milk and alternatives
- 2 meat and alternatives
- 30 - 45 mL (2 to 3 Tbsp) of unsaturated oils and fats

Making these changes in your life can be quite difficult at first, but it becomes easier to make these changes when you understand each factor, the importance of the changes, and practical ways to make the changes.

We all love benefits! So, adopting a balanced diet not only reduces your risk of breast cancer, but also:
- Improves overall health
- Lowers risk of other diseases
- Promotes a healthy body weight
- Results in feeling and looking better
- Increases energy
- Increases muscle and bone strength
