Karyn Stowe is a mom of three and an integral part of the Bloor West Village Mom network. She has been an active member of Mumnet, Mumvet and Moms on Bloor (MOB) and was instrumental in setting up the Roncevalles Mumnet group. She is also a young breast cancer survivor and was approached by Rethink Breast Cancer to share her story in a documentary film called AboutHer. Karyn found the courage to agree to be put up on the big screen and AboutHer premiered at Rethink’s Breast Fest Film Festival in November 2009 to wonderful response. Over 30 women from her neighborhood came to support her on opening night. But, not everyone could make it and a lot of Karyn’s friends were asking when it would be shown again.
I’m fortunate enough to live in Bloor West Village too. So, by pulling a few strings at work, I arranged that we could show the movie at a Moms on Bloor meeting. And that’s what happened on Thursday morning. For this group of women, seeing AboutHer was very moving. Four of the five women portrayed in the movie have young children so for the Moms on Bloor group, it hit close to home. And of course their personal connection to Karyn and I made it even more real. It was, to quote Hayley in AboutHer, “INTENSE”. But we went on to have a great discussion about the different types of breast cancer, the risks of breast cancer, being breast aware and generally being your own medical advocate. And about how sweating the small stuff can sometimes be a good thing!
I’d like to thank Carla and Mary co-chairs of MOB for the opportunity to show AboutHer and share some of the great work Rethink Breast Cancer is doing in educating and supporting young women. And thanks to all the women for being so receptive to the movie and discussion and for being so patient with my public speaking over caffeinated nerves.
Let us know if you’d like Rethink Breast Cancer to come speak at your group (in Toronto and Calgary). We are always looking for opportunities to share information and resources and most of all to hear from the women we aim to serve!
Best,
Maura Young, Director Finance and HR, Rethink Breast Cancer
P.S. Our new “Show Your Breasts Some TLC” cards were handed out to the Bloor West Moms. We’re happy to send them out to other groups too. Contact us if you are interested in receiving these cute and informative cards.
