World Cancer Day

Hi everyone,

Despite the incredible work and advances made in research the past two decades, cancer remains the leading cause of death world-wide. My inner circle has been hit hard. My mom (breast), my grandmother (breast and colon), my mother-in-law (lymphoma), my sister-in-law (breast), another sister-in-law’s mom and dad (optical melanoma and skin melanoma). Two of my closest girlfriends have a parent that’s had cancer (one breast; the other prostate).  The World Health Organization and International Union Against Cancer have marked today
World Cancer Day.

Today, let’s remember anyone in our life that’s dealing with cancer or mourning a loss from cancer. We can feel helpless and out of control when it comes to this monster of a disease. I certainly get overwhelmed by the “carcinogen soup” that is daily life in 2010. But, there are things we can do to prevent cancer. These are the top 4 cancer prevention measures that are featured on the WHO site:

no tobacco use
a healthy diet and regular exercise
limited alcohol use
protection against cancer-causing infections

My last blog post talked about the remarkable impact exercise can have on prevention of breast cancer as well as on survivorship for breast cancer patients (increasing energy, combating chemo side effects etc). Breast cancer patients in the Toronto area may be interested in an upcoming 8 week series on Yoga for the Immune System. A friend of a friend passed the information along to Rethink. Looks like the course will be offered in April. The instructor says that in most sessions, 90% of participants have cancer, mostly breast cancer. Sounds like a great way to combat side-effects and meet other breast cancer patients.

As always, we encourage you to let your family and friends know about the Rethink Blog and encourage you to view Rethink's various breast cancer support programs by visiting our website.
