Count Down to Breast Fest

Our Breast Fest Film Festival is less than two weeks away! I can admit it now, but at this time last year, I had some nervousness when telling people about the festival, asking them to come out. It was our first year and we really had no idea what to expect. Could we pull off our first ever film festival? Would people come? Or, would it be a “bust” showing films to empty seats. It turned out to be a fantastic weekend with great turn-out. Our inaugural Breast Fest was professional, powerful, exciting and inspiring. We were overjoyed with our first effort and got amazing feedback. So, this year, I’m telling the world and will be a lot pushier with my emails to friends. I can say with confidence that I know they will love the experience.

I’m especially excited about our opening night line-up. Our feature, Heart of the Sea, is a beautiful and inspiring film that tells the story of Rell Sunn, a pioneer of women’s professional surfing who was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 32 at the height of her surfing career. We are also showing a short documentary film about Her 2 positive women called About Her. Rethink Breast Cancer was involved in the making of the documentary so it’s a very personal film for us. We know the five women featured in the documentary—they are all incredible women— and I’m so proud of how the film turns out. All five women will be at the Opening Night screening. Two are being flown in (from Saskatoon and Calgary) and together the five stars will walk the pink carpet on opening night and see their stories up on the big screen. Afterwards, we’ll have our big opening party to celebrate. I can’t wait!
