30 Day Challenge

It feels like only yesterday I was blogging about my 11 day detox-well here I am again 3 months later with another intense health challenge!  On Monday I started a 30 day Bikram yoga challenge.  Bikram yoga is a hot yoga practiced in a room heated to 105°F (40.5°C) with a humidity of 40%! Classes are guided by a constant dialogue including 26 postures and two breathing exercises and the class is 90 minutes long.  Needless to say it is very intense! I have been practicing Bikram for about 4 months and I decided to sign up for the challenge at Bikram Yoga Forest Hill with about 30 other people.  I guess I was up for a big challenge to start 2010!  Too make this challenge even more meaningful I decided to set a fundraising goal of $1000 on our Reachout 4Rethink page and I have almost met my goal!! It is important for me that I can give back and help young women and families battling breast cancer while doing something for myself.  It was super easy to register and you can do it for any challenge-running a marathon, starting a diet , shaving your head or any goal.  You can see my page and sponsor me by going to reachout4rethink.org and searching Alison under participants.

Unfortunately I am all too familiar with how incredibly challenging a cancer diagnosis and treatment can be.  My mother in law was diagnosed with ovarian cancer 5 years ago and she has been in and out of treatment for all those years.  Her hair has fallen out and grown back so many times I often forget when I see her (she lives in Montreal-I live in Toronto) whether she will have her own hair or a wig.  Her spirit and energy have been incredible (she just got back from driving to and from Florida-while in treatment!) and I cannot even imagine the challenges she faces emotionally and physically.  At Rethink for the past 9 years I have been privileged to know so many incredible young women who also have had to face these challenges. All of these women are a big part of my desire to take on this challenge.

I am only on day 4 and am wondering how I will find the time and energy and get through the next 26 days.  The support of my family and friends who have sponsored me is what will keep me going as well as the inspiration of all my friends and family dealing with cancer.  I will keep everyone posted on my progress!
