Last week, Rethink Breast Cancer took some first steps towards creating more of a presence in Quebec. Over the years, Rethink Breast Cancer has had some wonderful fundraisers in Montreal – Urban Apres ski was a hip event that was a huge hit. Our Fashion Targets Breast Cancer tees have been there. Funds raised through Rethink Breast Cancer’s Montreal events has helped support Rethink’s research program, including funding for a fantastic young scientist, Dr. Marc Tischkowitz. And, of course the events have helped deliver breast health awareness messages to young women (and men!). Rethink Breast Cancer is now very keen to establish some support programs for young breast cancer patients in Montreal – we know there are lots of young women battling breast cancer in Montreal who need age-appropriate support and community.
Our programs manager, Farheen, and I had great “meet and greets” with the Executive Directors of Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation, Hope and Cope, VOBOC (Venturing Out Beyond Our Cancer) and Ville Marie Medical Centre. Everyone gave us such a warm welcome and were really keen on Rethink Breast Cancer’s work. It seems like our plans for bringing Live Laugh Learn (and other core programs) to Montreal would not duplicate any existing work of organizations there. Plus, there are some great opportunites for collaboration! We are really excited. It’s such a vibrant city and we think our approach would be much appreciated. And, nothing gets me going like starting up something new.
Our next step is to go back later this spring and meet with oncology nurses and psychologists at the hospitals. We will also bring together some young women with breast cancer and hear their stories, identify needs and talk about ways Rethink Breast Cancer might help in Montreal. We will be looking to recruit a committee of volunteers to help advise and champion our Live Laugh Learn program. So, if you live there and are interested in getting involved, please get in touch!
Can’t wait to meet more people there next trip – and maybe squeeze in another yummy lunch at Café Santropol.
Best, MJ
