The Latest Addition to the Rethink Breast Cancer Team...

I’ll start by introducing myself – my name is Pam D’Ippolito and I’m the new Programs Coordinator for Rethink Breast Cancer. I am ecstatic to join the Rethink team and have been welcomed with open arms. Having a family history of breast cancer, joining Rethink has been an amazing opportunity to combine working for a cause so dear to me with my everyday life.

My mom would always tell me that I had a HUGE and very SOFT heart (much like hers)! That probably explains the countless stray animals I would bring home. I once stopped traffic on a very busy road to help a turtle cross the street. There are copious amount of worms that are still alive today because of my carefully taken steps when walking down the sidewalk on a rainy day. I learned all of these acts from my mom! As a result of my love of different species, I went on to become a Registered Veterinary Technician after having attained my university degree (in Chemical Engineering – yes, very different from the veterinary world!).

Specializing in Emergency and Critical Care, my work involved caring for very sick and severely injured animals. In the extremely quick pace that is part of a 24 hour hospital, I always tried my best to ensure not only that my patients received the highest level of medical care, but that they also knew (or at least felt) that they were loved. During this time, my mother, who had been diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, entered the hospital. I would literally leave one hospital, only to go directly to another – from companion animal to human and back.

Being a source of support for my mom brought out a different side of my caring nature. The need for support for young women affected by breast cancer was (and still is) fundamental. The more I would try to go about my day to day life, the more I felt the draw to be involved in assisting these women.

My mom is no longer around to show me the ways of life. There are times that I have to catch myself when I think “oh, I’ve got to tell mommy this…”. She didn’t get the chance to show me how to prepare her delicious “Croustilles de pommes” or help me pick out my wedding dress for the big day. But I see her strength and determination everywhere –in the baby birds in my backyard that learned to fly, in me when I switched my career path to Rethink Breast Cancer, and in the young women who participate in the Rethink programs. To me, our programs are essential. They help provide young women with breast cancer with the perseverance to move forward in life; which is important because all women should have the opportunity to teach their loved ones to save the worms.
