Me and my cat |
Hey everyone! My name is Jen, and I look forward to meeting you! I am the newest member of the Rethink Breast Cancer team – joining the lovely Farheen in the role of Coordinator, Support and Education Programs. We are kicking our programs up a notch this year, so we want to hear from you!
You can check out my bio to learn more about me. I mention somewhere in there that I love surprises…I should note that I am talking about a specific kind of surprise. There are obviously a lot of “surprises” to which I do not take too kindly at all.
Case in point: My husband proposed to me in the Spring of 2009 while we were zip-lining (yes…mid-flight!) in Costa Rica. That was an incredible surprise. We got married in the Fall of that year, and two weeks before the wedding, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. That surprise was not exhilarating in the slightest. In fact, she only discovered her lump because while she was trying on fancy bras to go with her fancy mother-of-the-bride dress, the change room had a breast-check information card that caught her eye.
Many of you are well acquainted with the trials and tribulations that were to follow. My mom and I are alike in so many ways, and I think we both dealt with the initial shock similarly: research, research, research. I spent so many nights awake until the wee hours of the morning, squinting at the computer screen while sifting through often contradictory information. I was scared for mom, and I was scared for me too. Suddenly breast cancer had taken over. Should we stop eating soy? Or eat more of it? Should I get a boob job to reduce my risk? Or rush into baby-making mode so that I could have a baby before 30 and statistically lower my chances? The first thing that became apparent in this fight was that there is so much information, and it is just too overwhelming to navigate when you first receive a tough diagnosis.
This is why the work that Rethink Breast Cancer does is so important. It takes an entirely innovative approach: and it’s effective. It focuses on empowerment. Right and relevant information. Community and communication. It fills specific, much-needed gaps in support for young women going through it. I deeply admire and abide by Rethink’s stance that positive energy is the most powerful healing tool available to women, and am thoroughly excited to be able to contribute to such amazing and inspiring activities. This is a cause to which I can whole-heartedly relate.
